Overview

Hearing Loss Network
A Not-for-Profit California Corporation

Hearing Loss Network (HLN) was established in 2002 to provide assistance to hard of hearing and late-deafened people in the San Diego area. Many organizations attempt to serve "Deaf and hard of hearing" citizens. We believe that it is nearly impossible to effectively serve both populations, because their needs are very different. An organization focused specifically on hard of hearing and late-deafened people is required to adequately address their needs.

Programs

We have a lot of programs and are always adding and revising. Here is a sample of the kinds of things we do. If you're interested in one of these, or if you are aware of additional needs, please do let us know!

Speechreading Classes
The most common request we get from San Diegans with hearing loss is for speechreading classes, and we are very excited to announce that we now offer them! Speechreading (also known as lipreading) can really assist people to understand speech. It's far from a panacea, and what you see in movies and on television is pretty unrealistic. But everyone can speechread and everyone can get better by practicing. More information

Coping with Hearing Loss
Thousands of San Diegians struggle with various aspects of life because they have no idea of the resources that are available to help them deal with their hearing loss. Our "Coping with Hearing Loss" workshop educates folks about the free or inexpensive resources that can greatly reduce the significance of hearing loss in their daily lives. More information

Advocacy
It's a sad reality that people with disabilities do NOT have access to the same services as those without disabilities. Despite significant progress in the last twenty years, the gap continues. Hearing Loss Network is proud of its advocacy work, which addresses the needs of the hearing loss community as well as individual members of that community. More information

Speakers Bureau
Looking for a speaker for your event? Would your organization like to know more about hearing loss and how it affects people's lives? One of our speakers would love to share information with your organization. More information

Communications Workshops
Groups that include a hard of hearing or late-deafened member invariably struggle with communications issues related to hearing loss. Over time, the stress resulting from these communication issues can threaten the group's integrity. HLN conducts workshops that address these issues. These workshops focus on revealing the dynamics of hearing loss-related communications breakdowns, and on teaching communications techniques that mitigate the communications issues. More information

Computer Classes
HLN conducts beginning and intermediate computer classes for people with hearing loss. The instructor uses voice recognition software to convert his speech to text, and the text is displayed on a large screen using an LCD projector. This arrangement has been successfully used in the past; it eliminates the need for expensive real-time captioning (CART). The classes are held on four consecutive Saturdays. More information
