December 7 - HLN Presents Hearing Loss Program for Mission Valley Lions

We were thrilled to have the opportunity to discuss hearing loss with the Mission Valley Lions Club! The Lions have wonderful programs to benefit people with hearing loss, including their hearing aid recycling program and their low cost hearing aid program.

September 29 - HLN Presents 'Coping with Hearing Loss' Workshop at North County Inland Jewish Community Senior Center

Executive Director Larry Sivertson presented a one-hour version of HLN's popular 'Coping with Hearing Loss' Workshop at the North County Inland Jewish Community Center. The workshop was very well-attended and well-received. The participants were especially interested in the discussion of how to hear better in the presence of background noise.

September 18- HLN Participates in Deaf Awareness Day

HLN participated in San Diego's Deaf Awareness Day for the second year! We were thrilled to meet so many folks who are affected by hearing loss. Our digital camera/photo printer was kept busy providing pictures of the attendees. And lots of folks were thrilled to get hearing aid batteries for some of the best prices on the planet. This is one of our favorite events, and we hope to see you all again next year!

August 14 - HLN Provides San Diego County TTY File for Reverse 911 System Testing

We provided San Diego County with a .wav file that they can use to test their Reverse 911 System's TTY compatibility.

August 10 - 'Treating the Person' Article Published in 'California Audiology'

Last fall we were asked to write an article for 'California Audiology', a publication of the California Academy of Audiology. We chose one of our favorite topics, the idea that audiologists are the gatekeepers to hearing loss resources, and they can really enrich the lives of their patients by providing information on all the resources available to help those affected by hearing loss. It took awhile for the article to show up in the newsletter, but it finally arrived in the Summer 2004 Edition. Here's the html version. And here's the Word version.

August 7 - HLN Releases Article on Pending 2006 Captioner Shortage

FCC regulations require that 100% of new programming be captioned starting in January 2006. We believe that the severe shortage of captioners will prevent this from happening, and that the logistics of the situation make this situation FAR worse than previous increases in captioning requirements. Here's the html version. And here's the Word version.

August 5 - HLN Releases Advocacy Handout for 2004 ALDAcon

HLN is proud to serve on the ALDA Advocacy committee. Our goal is to encourage ALDAns to become involved in advocating for people with hearing loss. We wrote up a summary of our emergency captioning advocacy efforts to be handed out at the 2004 ALDAcon Advocacy Workshop. Here's the HTML version. And here's the Word version.

HLN applauds Channel 10's extremely supportive response to the emergency captioning concerns following last fall's wildfires.

It was a great discussion and everyone learned a lot!

March 31 - HLN Inquires About TTY Compatibility of County's Reverse 911 System

We recently saw an article in the paper about a new reverse 911 system being installed in San Diego. The system allows emergency personnel to call you in case of emergency, rather than you calling them; it is being installed to provide greater responsiveness in emergency situations like last fall's wildfires. So we contacted the county to determine if the new system would be able to call people who use TTYs. Here's what happened.
