Hearing Loss Network News - 2006 Here are our recent press releases. If you're interested in keeping up with what we're doing, this is the place to do it! Our mission gets us out in the community on an ongoing basis, and here's where we'll keep you up to date. Check back often, and please do let us know if you think we're not doing a very good job of keeping you informed. Here are some of Hearing Loss Network's highlights for 2006: Jan 4 - HLN ED Attends National Emergency Planning Task Force Meeting Executive Director Larry Sivertson journeyed to Washington DC to participate in the first meeting of the Community Emergency Preparedness Information Network (CEPIN) project to develop an emergency preparedness course for first responders and members of the hearing loss community. Larry accepted the assignment to co-author the chapter on the diversity of the hearing loss population and the communication challenges they face. Jan 14 - HLN ED Attends San Deigo Cochlear Implant Group Meeting Executive Director Larry Sivertson attended the regular bi-monthly meeting of the San Diego Cochlear Implant Group. This organization supports CI users and parents of children with CIs, and the meetings are always very interesting! Subjects included technology, organizations, coping skills, and communications tips! Sept 13 - HLN ED Attends Police Chief's Disability Advisory Panel Meeting Larry attended the meeting of the Chief's Disability Advisory Panel Meeting. Much of the meeting was devoted to discussing the case of a deaf man who was beaten by several other young men. How the police department communicated with the hearing loss community was of particular interest. Sept 25 - HLN ED Attends DDTP Public Participation Forum Larry attended the meeting at which the Deaf and Disabled Telecommunications Program sought input from the user community. Larry commented that California should be moving to full access for CapTel phones. Sept 30 - HLN Exhibits at Deaf Awareness Day HLN exhibited at Deaf Awareness Day again this year. The expo continues to grow, as 1700 people attended this year. We spoke to a lot of people with hearing loss, handed out lots of literature, and invited people to attend our meetings and events, Oct 1 - HLN Begins Fall Speechreading Class Today is the first session of our fall speechreading class. This six-week class teaches the basics of speechreading. We tell our students that some people are naturally better speechreaders than others, but everyone can get better with practice. More information Oct 18 - HLN Exhibits at VA's Disability Fair Chairman Joan Padilla joined a group of ALDAns to exhibit at the Veteran Administration's disability fair. This was a very well-attended event, and we provided lots of information and support! Oct 18 - 22 - HLN Personnel Attend ALDA National Convention Larry and Char attended ALDAcon, the ALDA national convention. This is one of our favorite events. The workshops are great, and of course it's wonderful to see old friends and make new ones. But the very best part of this conference is Karaoke Night. (You read that right! Now try to imagine it! ;-) Here's our coverage of this GREAT convention. Nov 9 - HLN ED Attends Meeting of California VR Deaf and HOH Advisory Committee Larry attended his first meeting as a member of the California Vocational Rehabilitation (VR) Deaf and Hard of Hearing Advisory Committee. The purpose of the committee is to advise the VR organization on the needs of the hearing loss community. |
