Hearing Loss Network News - 2007 Here are our recent press releases. If you're interested in keeping up with what we're doing, this is the place to do it! Our mission gets us out in the community on an ongoing basis, and here's where we'll keep you up to date. Check back often, and please do let us know if you think we're not doing a very good job of keeping you informed. Here are some of Hearing Loss Network's highlights for 2007: Jan 13 - HLN ED Attends San Deigo Cochlear Implant Group Meeting Executive Director Larry Sivertson attended the regular bi-monthly meeting of the San Diego Cochlear Implant Group. This organization supports CI users and parents of children with CIs, and the meetings are always very interesting! For more information, please point your browser to their YahooGroups Page Feb 2 - HLN ED Presents at St. Paul's Manor Larry presented on hearing loss to a group of seniors at St. Paul's Manor. The group was very interested and expressed an interest in forming an ongoing hearing loss group. Larry agreed to assist them in getting their group started. Feb 4 - HLN ED Named Keynote Speaker at SayWhatClub National Convention Larry has been named the keynote speaker at the SayWhatClub national convention in Las Vegas from May 9 - 12. More information on this convention is available at the SayWhatClub website. Feb 16 - HLN ED to Help St. Paul's Manor Organize a Hearing Loss Group Larry has been asked by the folks at St. Paul's Manor to help them get their hearing loss group established. Of course, he readily agreed! Mar 1 - HLN ED conducted first semi-monthly meeting at St. Paul's Manor Larry conducted the first regular meeting of a new hearing loss group being assembled at St. Paul's manor. Larry discussed and demonstrated a variety of assistive listening devices,and the residents expressed a lot of interest in the devices and in the group!. Mar 15 - HLN ED conducted regular semi-monthly meeting at St. Paul's Manor At this meeting we discussed some of the communications issues that affect people with hearing loss. How to help family and friends better understand hearing loss was a popular topic. Apr 19 - HLN ED conducted regular semi-monthly meeting at St. Paul's Manor We went over an audiogram and discussed how different types of hearing loss would look on an audiogram. Larry also demonstrated speech recognition technology. The attendees were very interested in both topics! May 3 - HLN ED conducted regular semi-monthly meeting at St. Paul's Manor Several new members have recently joined the group, and they were very interested in assistive devices. So we spent the entire meeting discussing and demonstrating them. May 8 - HLN ED attends California Vocational Rehabilitation Advisory Council Meeting Larry attended a regularly scheduled meeting of the California Vocational Rehabilitation Advisory Council. Larry was appointed to two workgroups to address program improvements for hard of hearing people and to improve access to assistive devices. May 9 - 12 - HLN Personnel Attend SayWhatClub National Convention Larry

Larry was the keynote speaker! May 17 - HLN ED conducted regular semi-monthly meeting at St. Paul's Manor We spend the meeting discussing hearing aids, tinnitus, and assistive devices. The group is really interested in things they can do to improve communication! May 30 - HLN ED Trains California RCDs Larry conducted a half-day training of California's Vocational Rehabilitation Counselors for the Deaf and Hard of Hearing. The topic was how to better serve consumers who are hard of hearing or late-deafened. June 7 - HLN ED conducted regular semi-monthly meeting at St. Paul's Manor We finished up the discussion from last meeting, then played a couple of games of speechreading bingo, which everyone really enjoyed! June 20 - 24 - HLN Personnel Attend HLAA National Convention Larry and Char attended the HLAA national convention in Oklahoma City, where their workshop was very well received! July 3 - HLN Personnel Present at PET-D Larry and Char presented a full-day training to a group of hearing loss professionals attending San Diego State's summer PET-D program. The topic was improving services for hard of hearing and late-deafened folks. July 5 - HLN ED conducted regular semi-monthly meeting at St. Paul's Manor We had been talking about doing some speechreading at these meetings, so today was the day! We did some of the first lesson on the letters 'p', 'b', and 'm'. Everyone enjoyed the class, and we decided to have speechreading at every other meeting! July 19- HLN ED conducted regular semi-monthly meeting at St. Paul's Manor The bulk of today's meeting was devoted to discussing a two-sided handout on Communications Tips. One side has tips for people with hearing loss, and the other side has tips for hearing people. Group members shared their experiences with various situations, and we had some very good discussions about how to be sure people adhere to the varous tips! Aug 16 - HLN ED conducted regular semi-monthly meeting at St. Paul's Manor We spent quite a bit of time talking about the new TV they will be getting and what kind of assistive listening system they should get for it. Then we finished the Communications Tips discussion that we started last week. Sept 6 - HLN ED conducted regular semi-monthly meeting at St. Paul's Manor The folks at St. Pauls have their new TV and are trying out an FM system so people can easily hear it. We used the system for the meeting, and everyone was quite positive about it. We're all hoping that the TV and the new system will be installed by our next meeting! Sept 17 - HLN ED presents at Brookview Manor Larry had presented at Brookview Manor a couple of years ago, and they asked him back again to talk about coping with hearing loss. We had a pretty good turnout, and several people had very specific questions. As usual at these presentations, assistive technology and hearing aids dominated the discussion! Sept 20- HLN ED conducted regular semi-monthly meeting at St. Paul's Manor This was a great meeting, because it was entirely driven by questions from the members! We talked about all kinds of things, with the focus on hearing aids and cochlear implants. The underlying theme is how people can hear better in difficult situations. Sept 29- HLN Exhibits At Deaf Awareness Day We shared a booth with the ALDA folks this year. Overall attendence seemed to be up compared to last year, but there were very few hard of hearing and late-deafened people. Of course it was still great to see old friends and meet some new people! Oct 4 - HLN ED conducted regular semi-monthly meeting at St. Paul's Manor We continued the hearing aid and cochlear implant discussion from last week, and also discussed getting back to speechreading classes (now that the new TV and VCR are installed ;-) Oct 17- HLN Exhibits at Veterans Hospital Disability Awareness Event We had a wonderful class working on our speechreading! We did some work using video tapes, and also had some one-on-one drills. Everyone really enjoyed getting back to speechreading! Oct 18- HLN ED conducted regular semi-monthly meeting at St. Paul's Manor We had a wonderful class working on our speechreading! Nov 1 - HLN ED conducted regular semi-monthly meeting at St. Paul's Manor Because of the recent wildfires here in San Diego we discussed emergency preparedness at today's meeting. It was a great discussion with lots of audience involvement! Nov 15 - HLN ED conducted regular semi-monthly meeting at St. Paul's Manor We spent much of the meeting talking about how hearing loss affects our relationships with others and what we can do during the holidays to ensure that we don't feel left out. We also spent some time practicing our speechreading. Dec 6 - HLN ED conducted regular semi-monthly meeting at St. Paul's Manor We continued our discussion of holiday activities and how to deal with them, and then spent some time practicing our speechreading. Dec 20- HLN ED conducted regular semi-monthly meeting at St. Paul's Manor We devoted the bulk of this session to speechreading. |
