Hearing Loss Network News - 2008 Here are our recent press releases. If you're interested in keeping up with what we're doing, this is the place to do it! Our mission gets us out in the community on an ongoing basis, and here's where we'll keep you up to date. Check back often, and please do let us know if you think we're not doing a very good job of keeping you informed. Here are some of Hearing Loss Network's highlights for 2008: Jan 14 - HLN ED Presents at NFPA Technical Committee Meetings Larry presented at the National Fire Prevention Association Technical Committee Meetings. The purpose of the presentations was to request that the committees require a low-frequency, multi-frequency alarm as the standard device in place of the current single (high) frequency alarm. Studies have shown that the proposed alarms are much more effective in alerting virtually everyone, including people with hearing loss. It's still early in the process, but it looks like this request may be honored and the corresponding requirements included in the code during the next cycle! Mar 12 - HLN ED Presents at Grossmont College Larry presented at one of the classes in the new Grossmont College Deafness Degree program. These presentations are especially important, because they often represet a large portion of the information the students get on people who are hard of hearing or late-deafened. (The bulk of these progams is on people who are culturally Deaf.) Mar 19 - HLN Meets with Deaf Community Services Larry and Bill Zitrin of Hearing Loss Network met with Leslie Elion, the executive director of Deaf Community Services (DCS) to explore potential collaborations between the two organizations. It was a very positive meeting, and plans are already in the works for some joint efforts. Stay tuned! Mar 21- HLN ED Presents at St. Paul's Independent Living Center Larry has been conducting a twice monthly meeting at St. Paul's for over a year now, and the meetings continue to be entertainint and educational for all involved. The facility administrator asked Larry if he would speak at the March Open Forum to inform the general population about the issues of hearing loss that so many residents face. It was a very informative presentation, and very well received by the large audience!
