Outreach
People with hearing loss don't generally run around shouting about it.
Most people who suffer from hearing loss first deny the problem for
as long as they possibly can; when that's no longer possible, they may
admit the problem to themselves and family members, but they try to
hide it from the rest of the world. The bottom line for organizations
like ours is that they're tough to find. We're working to root 'em out
with an ongoing outreach program. More information

Computer
Classes for People with Hearing Loss
HLN conducts beginning and intermediate computer classes for people
with hearing loss. The instructor uses voice recognition software
to convert his speech to text, and the text is displayed on a large
screen using an LCD projector. This arrangement has been successfully
used in the past; it eliminates the need for expensive real-time captioning
(CART). The classes are held on four consecutive Saturdays. More

Communications
Workshops for People Affected by Hearing Loss
Families and other groups that include a hard of hearing or late-deafened
member invariably struggle with communications issues related to hearing
loss. Over time, the stress resulting from these communication issues
can threaten the integrity of the group. HLN conducts workshops that
address these issues. These workshops focus on revealing the dynamics
of hearing loss-related communications breakdowns, and on teaching communications
techniques that mitigate the communications issues. More
